Some companies may request a physical exam be conducted as a requirement to starting a new job. Pre-employment physical exams will vary based on the patient’s occupation, but the goal of the exam is to assess your physical ability to perform the duties required for the corresponding job.

In order to obtain DOT/CDL License, a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination must be conducted by a licensed “medical examiner” listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry. NorthShore has licensed providers on staff who are able to conduct these exams.

Typically, a pre-employment exam entails:

  • Recording height, weight, blood pressure, and pulse
  • Discussing any medications or supplements you are taking
  • Checking reflexes, heart, lungs, joints, eyes, and ears

What to bring:

  • Any forms you need signed and returned to your employer
  • A list of medications you currently take
  • Glasses or hearing aids

Once your doctor or nurse practitioner has reviewed your medical history and performed the necessary physical exam, he or she will complete the necessary paperwork required for your employment or DOT/CDL License.
