Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) Treatment

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a safe, effective treatment used to slow or stop the progression of tooth decay. It is commonly recommended for young children, patients with special healthcare needs, or individuals who are not able to tolerate traditional dental procedures such as fillings.

SDF is a clear antimicrobial liquid that is brushed onto areas of active tooth decay. It works by killing the bacteria that cause cavities and hardening the decayed area, preventing the cavity from getting worse. The process is quick, completely painless, and does not require numbing or drilling.

After SDF is applied, areas of decay may turn dark brown or black. This discoloration is a normal and expected outcome—it indicates that the decay has been arrested. Healthy areas of the tooth will not be stained. If SDF accidentally comes into contact with skin or gums, it may leave a temporary dark stain that fades within 1 to 3 weeks.

SDF may need to be reapplied every 6 to 12 months to ensure continued effectiveness. If the treated area becomes hard, it means the decay has been successfully stopped. In some cases, a filling may still be placed at a later date, depending on the patient’s needs. It’s important to understand that while SDF is highly effective, there is still a risk that decay may continue in some cases and further treatment may be needed, such as a filling, crown, or extraction.

Silver Diamine Fluoride is a helpful option for managing tooth decay in a minimally invasive way. If you’re unsure whether SDF is appropriate for you or your child, our dental team is happy to answer your questions and help determine the best course of treatment.
