Cataract Evaluations at NorthShore

Cataracts are cloudy areas in the usually clear lens of the eye. A cataract can interfere with your vision. These usually happens to those over 55, but they can also happen in children or infants. Cataracts are usually present in both eyes, however, one side may be worse than the other side.

A cataract can cause issues with vision as it prevents the lens from focusing properly. They generally form over time, and some symptoms of cataracts include blurry vision, difficulty seeing at night, sensitivity to glare when driving at night time, and reduced intensity of colors.

According to the American Optometric Association, cataracts can be caused by diabetes, certain drugs such as corticosteroids and chlorpromazine, UV rays, smoking, alcohol, and nutritional deficiencies. Cataracts can be diagnosed as part of the comprehensive eye exam, although further testing may be necessary in some cases.

If there is minimal vision impairment, no treatment might be necessary. However, for more severe cases, changing the eyeglass prescription or surgery may be needed. If this is the case, discuss the benefits and risks of surgery with your eye care provider.
