Many patients do not realize that diabetes can affect their eyes. Regular eye exams are very important for those with diabetes. Diabetic patients should have an eye exam every year to help prevent and treat optical issues.

During a diabetic eye exam, the optometrist will dilate your eyes to see the retina better. This is done by putting drops into your eyes that make the pupils bigger. The optometrist can then see the back of your eye and diagnose any issues he or she may find.

Those with Type 1 Diabetes should have an eye exam within five years of being diagnosed and then annually.

Those with Type 2 Diabetes should have an eye exam shortly after being diagnosed. After the initial exam, another should be completed annually. Exams may be needed more frequently if you are suffering from eye problems.

If you are diabetic and planning to get pregnant, you should talk to your provider about an eye exam. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that you get an eye exam within the first three months of your pregnancy, and then again one year after the baby is born.
