Keeping Kids Safe on the Field: Youth Sports Safety Tips

A group of balls with the words play smart play safe.

At NorthShore, we love seeing kids stay active and healthy through sports. From soccer and baseball to dance and gymnastics, youth sports help build strong bodies, teamwork skills, and lifelong confidence. With all the fun that comes from playing, it’s important to take steps to keep young athletes safe.

Here are a few simple ways to help prevent injuries and keep them in the game:

Use the Right Gear

Helmets, mouth guards, pads, and proper footwear can make a huge difference in preventing injuries. Always double-check that equipment fits well and is in good condition.

Warm Up and Cool Down

Stretching and light exercise before and after games or practices can help protect muscles and joints. Encourage kids to make this a habit—they’ll thank you later!

Stay Hydrated

Proper hydration keeps energy levels high and reduces the risk of heat-related illnesses. Pack a water bottle for every practice and remind your child to take water breaks.

Schedule a Sports Physical

Before your child hits the field or court, make sure they’re ready to play. A sports physical helps catch any potential health concerns early and ensures your child is healthy enough for activity.
