Have you ever sat in a doctor’s office Googling your symptoms, asking ChatGPT what a diagnosis means, or searching for answers after an appointment because you weren’t sure what your provider meant? You’re not alone.
It’s natural to turn to the internet when you have questions about your health, but knowing how to find reliable information, understand what it means and speak up when something isn’t clear is just as important.
October is Health Literacy Month, a reminder that understanding your health can help you make more informed decisions and feel more confident about your care.

Here are three ways to take a more active role in your health:
- Ask questions. If your provider uses medical terms you don’t understand or explains things too quickly, speak up! Ask them to slow down, explain it in simpler terms or repeat anything you missed. You deserve to understand your health and feel confident about your care.
- Speak up about your concerns. Share your symptoms, health history and anything that doesn’t feel right.
- Come prepared. Write down questions before your appointment and take notes so you can refer to them later.
