Understanding Epilepsy: What You Need to Know About Seizures

Epilepsy is a condition that causes recurring seizures, which happen when the brain’s normal activity is disrupted. It affects people of all ages and can look different from person to person. Some seizures involve convulsions, while others may be subtle.
Types of Seizures
There are many types of seizures, but they generally fall into two categories:
Focal seizures – Start in one area of the brain and may cause confusion or unusual movements.
Generalized seizures – Affect both sides of the brain and can cause muscle stiffness, jerking, or loss of consciousness.
How to Help Someone Having a Seizure
- Stay calm and time the seizure
- Move objects away to prevent injury.
- Roll them on their side if they’re unconscious.
- Do not put anything in their mouth.
- Call 911 if the seizure lasts more than 5 minutes or if it’s their first seizure.
