In today’s society, technology plays a significant role in our lives, including during emergencies. On October 4th at 1:00pm CST, a national emergency alert test will take place to ensure the effectiveness of our nation’s mass communication systems. Cellular devices, televisions, and radio systems will broadcast the alert. While these alerts are important for public safety, they can also pose challenges for individuals who are in unsafe situations and trying to hide a device.

Emergency alerts can potentially expose individuals to retaliation, especially in cases of domestic violence. At-risk users should adjust their settings to silence the alert.

For iPhone:

  1. Go to Settings menu.
  2. Select Notifications.
  3. Scroll to Government Alerts section.
  4. Turn off alerts.

For Android:

  1. Go to Settings menu.
  2. Select Safety & Emergency.
  3. Scroll to Wireless Emergency Alerts.
  4. Turn off alerts.

At NorthShore Health Centers, we understand the important role of technology and the necessity to ensure its safe and appropriate use. The national emergency alert test reminds us of the balance between technology and safety, especially for those facing domestic violence. By raising awareness, we aim to contribute to a safer and more secure community for everyone.
