Mammography at NorthShore

NorthShore is proud to offer multiple different types of mammography services. With state-of-the-art equipment, NorthShore is able to provide mammogram screenings to help with the early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer. Annual exams should be performed on women age 40 and older. If there is a family history of breast cancer, it may be recommended to start having mammograms as early as age 30. NorthShore is proud to be recognized as a Pink Ribbon Facility to be recognized for excellence in breast health.

Digital Mammography (2D Mammography)
NorthShore is proud to be able to offer digital mammography. In digital mammography, the breast image is captured on specially designed digital detectors. The digital detector converts X-rays into an electric signal, which is then sent to a computer. The radiologist can review the digital mammogram on a high-resolution computer monitor.

Tomosynthesis (3D Mammography)
Tomosynthesis 3D Mammography is a special kind of mammogram that produces a 3D image of the breast by using several low dose X-rays obtained at different angles. For tomosynthesis, the breast is positioned and compressed in the same way as for a normal mammogram. However, the X-ray tube moves in a circular arc around the breast. It takes less than 4 seconds for the scan (with our highest technology at our Hammond location). The information from the X-ray is sent to a computer, which produces a focused 3D image of the breast. The X-ray dose for tomosynthesis is similar to that of a regular mammogram.
